Lords of the Fallen - the so-called soft reboot of the soulslike "series" published by Polish company CI Games - will launch tomorrow. Original LotF from 2014 was remembered as a quite decent representative of the genre. And how is it with the game released almost a decade later? Well... it depends on whom you ask.

The first reviews of the game by Hexworks are appearing on the web, and they are very divergent. We can come across "9s", but also "6s", and even "5s" and "4s" on a 10-point scale..

Selected reviews of Lords of the Fallen

  • XboxEra - 94/100
  • IGN - 8/10
  • Game Informer - 6/10
  • God is a Geek - 8/10
  • TheSixthAxis - 4/10
  • Wccftech - 6.8/10
  • GRYOnline.pl - 7/10
  • Gfinity - 7/10
  • TheGamer - 7/10
  • PC Gamer - 79/100
  • Metacritic - 76/100 (average of 39 reviews for the PC version)
  • OpenCritic - 74/100 (average of 29 reviews)

Massive fluctuations

Lords of the Fallen seems to be a game that has significantly divided the reviewers and it's difficult to name aspects that are unequivocally bad or good.

The vast majority praised the Axion and Umbral worlds system. The fact that after death we can be reborn in the intriguing land of the dead or "look into" it with the help of the Umbral Lamp is universally praised by almost everyone. The cooperative system - effective and easy to use - also deserves a good word.

In addition, the graphics are often mentioned as a positive, as well as the wide range of possibilities in strenghtening our character, but these opinions are no longer shared by everyone.

The bone of contention is the storyline, for some interesting and enigmatic, for others - just some background, an excuse to fight strange monsters.

While we're on the subject of combat, it is precisely this that many reviewers did not like (although some find it satisfying). There have been voices suggesting that Lords of the Fallen has a problem with the difficulty level balance and instead of being an engaging challenge, the clashes are simply frustrating.

Similar accusations are directed at boss fights - a significant portion of which are said to be simply not very engaging.

As you can see, Lords of the Fallen has certainly divided the reviewers and compared to its direct competitor - the recently released Lies of P - it performs noticeably worse. Which doesn't necessarily mean it's a bad game, it's just that not all elements came out equally well.

Recall that Lords of the Fallen will be released tomorrow on PC, PS5 and XSX/S.
