'It Resembled The Last of Us;' David Fincher is Happy That World War Z Sequel Got Canceled
Director David Fincher has revealed his idea for a sequel to the popular World War Z. At the same time, the filmmaker assured that he does not feel bitter about the failure to complete the project.
In 2013, Marc Forster's horror movie World War Z debuted on cinema screens. The production starred Brad Pitt, who portrayed a former UN official investigating the outbreak of a zombie apocalypse. The movie adaptation of Max Brooks' novel proved to be a huge hit, earning a total of $540 million from theaters around the world and opening the door for a possible sequel.
In 2019, David Fincher took on the task of creating a sequel, but due to budgetary reasons the movie did not materialize. Interestingly, the filmmaker does not regret at all that he was not given the opportunity to present his vision on the screen, as it was very reminiscent of the hit HBO show The Last of Us. The latter, in turn, in his opinion, had "more room" to explore the same themes.
"Well, it resembled The Last of Us. I'm glad we didn't do what we planned, because The Last of Us has a lot more room for exploration of the same things. In our opening sequence we intended to use a small parasite.... they [the developers of The Last of Us - editor's note] used it in their sequence, in that great opening in a David Frost-style talk-show with Dick Cavett," Fincher explained in an interview with the editors of GQ UK.
At this point, it is uncertain whether we will ever see the sequel to World War Z. Initially, the movie was supposed to be the beginning of a trilogy, but apparently Paramount Pictures is not eager to put those plans into action.
It is worth mentioning that David Fincher is currently busy promoting his latest work, Killer starring Michael Fassbender. The thriller will debut on Netflix on November 10, this year. The service's library also includes World War Z.
